SPRING has Sprung!

 Ok..so it's still super rainy but the green is back! 

Here are the ways your 2nd graders have also been leafing out!

We Visit the Theater!

We had a great trip to see Elephant and Piggy Are in a Play. We all enjoyed the experience.






 Birthdays

April is a BIG birthday month in our class. We do not do food birthdays but we have a lot of fun with our name game. The birthday child picks a category (animals is a favorite) and we have to find matches for the letters in their name .

Time, Money, and Measurement
In math we have been working on telling time to 5 minutes, recognizing and adding the value of coins, and linear measurement. These concepts are like new languages. They need lots of practice for mastery. If the opportunity arises in any of these areas, please take a teachable moment so they can keep up their practice.








We Say Goodbye to Chris
Chris and his mom and dad moved to Dupont so we had to say goodbye. We made and signed a big poster for him to take to his new house. Sometimes we still see him show up on our Classwize monitor when we are doing iReady!

100 Day of School
Challenge: can you use 100 toothpicks and 100 gummies to build a bridge that will span a 4 inch gap and hold 100 pennies. We worked in teams and had a lot of fun!









We also looked around and found friends that we did not have 100 days ago.





And Then it was Valentines Day!
Thanks for all of the cereal boxes. The children had a great time cutting out hearts and creating their mailboxes. We also made origami, "I only have fries for you" valentines.






















Wednesday Workshops
Wednesdays we usually have an art, science, or art workshop. We worked with a partner to create a 
Play-doh model of the layers of the earth...crust, outer mantle, inner mantle and core. It was great fun to watch as we cut the ball apart to see our two halves.






We have been studying the effects of water on earth. We did an experiment to demonstrate that water  flows from high places to low places (Thus our soggy field) 








To celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday, we went to Art Hub for kids and drew a picture of the fish in The Cat and the Hat.














Continuing the goldfish theme, we learned about Nowruz, the Persian New Year. The goldfish is one of the symbols on the Haft Seen Table. It symbolizes wealth and life.

We also learned about our teeth. We learned about the layers of the tooth...enamel, dentin, pulp and root.
A hard boiled egg was an excellent model for our teeth. We did an experiment on coffee stained eggs to see what cleaned them best; dry toothbrush, wet toothbrush, or toothpaste and toothbrush. Everyone agreed that the toothpaste cleaned off the stain the best. Some people ate their eggs, others made desk pals. We got to bring our toothbrushes home.
















Animal Reports!

Thank you all for the great support you provided to your child to get their first big home project  completed and in on time. The children were very excited to share their reports with the class. I learned so much from them!
















And that brings us up to date!
I hope you enjoy these last days of our break. Things go really fast from here on out.
Oh...if you have been doing any spring cleaning, we can still take gently used books for the book swap. Just send them in on Monday.

And So It Goes

 Well.... I certainly never anticipated the year ending the way it did for me...but as they say, life is what happens when you've made other plans. So...let's take our final look back at what I thought was an excellent year. Land Forms and Erosion We had lessons on Earth's land forms; mountains, buttes, valleys, rivers, canyons, etc. Next, we did a study on the action of water upon the Earth. We had learned that water flows from the high places to the lower. So we built a mountain out of corn meal. Then we created a source of rain to drip on our mountain. As we observed, the steady drip of water eventually eroded our mountain, creating many of the landforms we had learned about. For our Earth Day art, we created a circular painting to represent the Earth, then we included all of the landforms that we could! The results were very special. All Fall

😀 It's November! Temperatures are dropping, the rain is back, and we are officially in, The Big Dark. But our class is bright and busy! Frida Kahlo Cats We read about the artist Frida Kahlo as part of our character trait for Perseverance . Through many adversities, Frida continued to paint and stay true to herself. We honored her by using mixed media to create our Frida Kahlo cats. We even had a visit by Ms. Frida herself! Seasons We had a Science Wednesday where we learned about the cause of the seasons...the tilt of the Earth! We created a Wheel of Seasons to use throughout the year as months and seasons change.   Engineering Challenge  A Mystery Science lesson had us examining the different properties of materials. Then, the challenge. Imagining we had been stranded on an island awaiting the rescue boat, we discovered a need to protect our heads from the sun. Spring Forth

 Well, our principal said it...9 more Mondays to go. Let's take a look back at all we've been up to since Winter Break. In January, we created a class mural for Dr. King's birthday. One of his great dreams was for children of all backgrounds to be in school together...and we are! February is the shortest month with the MOST things to celebrate! First, we did all we could to support the Seahawks as they went on to win the Superbowl. The children enjoyed a drawing tutorial that turned out excellent replicas of the Seahawks logo. Mr Kirby started his multi-muscle fitness course. This is always a big hit with the children. The 100th Day of School is a huge milestone. We celebrated with a 100 kisses treasure hunt, and a group structure build , each team using 100 cups. Shortly after that we celebrated Valentine's Day. The children had a choice to create a paper plate "I love you beary much!" valentine, or an origami "I only have fries for you" valentine. ...
