Welcome to Our Classroom!

Welcome to our classroom for 2024-25. It's a busy place, with lots of learning. Here are some pictures so you can see how our days go.

Mornings can be a stressful period. With our new free breakfasts this year, lots of children are eating breakfast when the doors first open. The children engage in a collection of discovery boxes in the morning and STEAM activities in the afternoon for about 15 minutes. Children can relax and connect with each other before the day begins. These activities get both sides of the brain talking, and raises oxytocin, the feel good brain chemical. Now school can begin with a happy heart and a comfortable amygdala.

Our character trait for the month of September was Perseverance. It was also Hispanic Heritage. Who better to celebrate than Frida Kahlo! We read the book  Frida,  By Jonah Winter and Ana Juan. We also watched a pictorial video about Frida that showed her in bed with her body cast, and the contraption that was created so she could paint while laying in bed. She definitely helped us understand Perseverance. We created cat's in the style of Frida Kahlo using oil pastel's and water color.

This year we will be learning about The 3 States of Matter. We started with solids, then moved on to liquids. We learned that water has the property of adhesion; it likes to stick to itself. For our experiment, we first practiced using the pipette/dropper so we would only  do one drop at a time. Then we explored the property of adhesion by seeing how many drops we could get on a penny. They were very accurate...I had no one tellling me they got 100! (35 is the average.) The other lady in the pictures is Mrs. Sweetman, our Wednesday volunteer.

Our Mystery Science Kit gave us a great engineering challenge. We were tasked with  pretending we were stranded on an island. Help was on the way, but meanwhile, we needed a hat to keep the sun of our faces, and all we had was the things we had left from our shore lunch. They were very creative!!!

In Social Stidies we are learning about our government. We learned the purpose of government is to keep people safe so we can work together. Next we learned about The 3 Branches of Government. This week we will learn about the reponsibilities of citizenship and finally we will cover how we vote and the Electoral College.

Thank you again for coming to Parent Conferences and for you support of the Book Fair!
Here are some more pictures of the children and their creations.      🥰Ms. Rae
